Dr. Rex Lam is a clinical associate professor of emergency medicine practice and the Chair of Specialty of the 24-hour Outpatient and Emergency Department of Gleneagles Hospital Hong Kong. Before joining The University of Hong Kong, he was the Deputy Service Director of the Hong Kong East Cluster Quality and Safety Office of the Hospital Authority.
A practicing emergency physician and medical teacher, Rex has a strong interest in clinical toxicology, management of medical emergencies and disaster response. In 2015, he collaborated with the François-Xavier Bagnoud Center for Health and Human Rights of Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in conducting a multi-sectoral territory-wide scoping study on disaster preparedness of Hong Kong. He is currently an editor of the Hong Kong Medical Journal and deputy editor of the Hong Kong Journal of Emergency Medicine.

Dr Kevin KC Hung is an Assistant Professor in Emergency Medicine and an Assistant Professor (by courtesy) of the Division of Global Health and Humanitarian Medicine at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Dr Hung is an emergency medicine specialist with master degrees in public health and disaster medicine. He was the founding Director of Hong Kong Jockey Club Disaster Preparedness and Response Institute (HKJCDPRI). Dr Hung is also a Hong Kong Red Cross volunteer and had served as a field delegate after the Sichuan, China earthquake and typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.

Dr Eric Lau is an infectious epidemiologist at the University of Hong Kong with a focus on surveillance and transmission dynamics of infectious diseases in human and animals, and assessment of infection control measures. He utilized quantitative analytical methods to characterize transmission dynamics in the community setting and at the human-animal interface. His previous work has contributed to the understanding and control of emerging human and zoonotic diseases such as scarlet fever, SARS, MERS, avian influenza A(H7N9) and COVID-19. He has published over 120 peer-reviewed journal articles and serves on the editorial board of BMC Infectious Diseases and PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases, and as a statistical reviewer at The Lancet Child & Adolescent Health.

Dr Marc Chong
Faculty of Medicine, CUHK

Faculty of Medicine, CUHK
Marc Ka-chun CHONG is currently an Assistant Professor in Jockey Club School of Public Health and Primary Care and an Assistant Professor (by courtesy) in Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in CUHK. Since 2006, Marc has been working as a biostatistician in the Centre for Clinical Research and Biostatistics (former Centre for Clinical Trials), possessing rich experience in conducting various statistical analysis of academic and industrial clinical trials. He is also a statistical consultant for different consultation projects, for example, Development of Refined Population-based Model to Inform Resource Allocation, Surgical Outcomes Monitoring and Improvement Programme, and Intensive Care Units Outcomes Monitoring Program held by Hospital Authority.
Learning objectives:
- To understand the principle, assumptions, procedure, and limitations of commonly used biostatistics methods in emergency medicine research, such as C-statistics, multivariable logistic regression and survival analysis.
- To learn more advanced statistical methods such as propensity score matching, bootstrapping, K-means clustering
Format:
This workshop is designed for participants with experience in EM research. Each topic will start with a real-life example EM researchers likely encounter in their work, followed by solutions provided by academic biostatisticians. The theoretical basis and practical steps of each biostatistics method will be explained. There will be a 5-minute Q&A session at the end of each topic.
